Baldaev documented over 3,000 tattoos during his lifetime working as a prison guard. His work was even reported to the KGB, who recognized how these images could be “read” to establish facts about convicts.
The motifs are deliberately uncensored—ranging from violence and pornography to politics, alcohol, and social satire—showing how prisoners marked themselves inside a rigid hierarchy. This is one of the most intense visual reference sources for symbol-heavy storytelling and raw iconography.
