The Master returns
It has been years in the making, but Kintaro Publishing is now proud to present Horiyoshi III’s much-anticipated sequel to his magnum opus collection of scroll paintings: Scrolls II. The ancient art of kakejiku scroll painting has provided generations with a source of inspiration and wonder, and Horiyoshi III continues this rich tradition in his own unmistakable style. Combining the refined spirit of Edo-era aesthetics with a stunningly modern sensibility, Horiyoshi III’s paintings burst into life with each delicate line and expressive brushstroke.
From skin to paper
In Horiyoshi III’s philosophy, every stroke of the needle counts. And the same goes for the brush. In Kintaro Publishing’s exclusive new volume, you will find 38 entirely new scroll paintings, presented in a unique vertical gatefold design. At almost a meter long, you can explore each work in unprecedented detail. Each painting is also accompanied by notes in Japanese and English from the artist himself, giving you in-depth insights into his creative process and inspirations.
A master of Japanese hand-tattooing (tebori), and one of the world’s foremost full-body tattoo artists, Horiyoshi III began drawing and painting to create samples for his tattoo clients. But it soon became clear that his talents with the brush more than matched his skill with the needle. His hand-painted scrolls are now exhibited and sought after all over the world. And thanks to Scrolls II, you can appreciate every detail to the fullest and discover a body of work like no other, like never before.
